Negoro Temple
Daito is the world oldest wooden pagoda of Buddhism, one of the biggest in Japan, national treasure.
Taishido is designated a national important cultural property.
The garden is also designated a national scenic spot.
A founder of Shinghi Shingon shu, KAKUBAN SHONIN.
Daito(Tahou-to)

This building embodies the doctorine of Shingon –Mikkyo.
Built in 1496, it is the oldest wooden pagoda in the world and also the largest wooden pagoda in Japan.
The pagoda survived the attack and the fire of HIDEYOSHI- the bullet marks clearly remain .
It was designated a national treasure in Meiji 32.

Seiten-do(temple)

This is a floating temple in the pond Seiten-ike, installs Seiten-zon.
At the inner part, Juichimen Kan-non, Bishamonten, Aizen-myo-oh and Daikokuten are installed.
At the façade, there is a platform lacquered with famous Negoro-nuri(the origin of lot’s of lacquers in Japan), its fresh orange color is still protected.
Taishi-do

This is a temple to deify KOBO-DAISHI as a principal image, statue of KUKAI- SHO-NIN, who founded Shingon-shu.
Built in the same period as Daito, it also survived from the attack of Tensho period.
This temple is designated as an important cultural property, with its Sumidan at the inner part.
Komyo-Shingon-den

This is shortened as Komyo-den.
Built in 1801, a statue of the founder KAKUBAN-SHO-NIN is installed.
At the right and left, mortuary tablets of successive abbots and believers are there, and memorial services are held day and night.
Fudo-do

Built in 1850 to deify KOGYO-DAISHI’s substitute, which is famous as KIRIMOMI-FUDOSON, as unparalleled in Japan.
When KOGYO-DAISHI encountered danger, this FUDOSON protected him as a substitute.
Fudo-do is designated an important cultural property by Wakayama Pref.
Amulet for traffic safety and protective prayer, this Fudo-do is very much famous.
This building is octagon shaped, a very rare building in Wakayama.
Gyoja-do

In this temple, priests burn the sacred fire called ”goma” , then practice important austerities of Shingon-Mikkyo.
As a principal image, EN-NO-GYOJA is deified.
Also this place marks the development of Buddhism.
Dai-denpo-in(San-Zon- Zo)

This is the main inner temple to summarize Negoro Temple.
At the center, there is DAINICHI-NYORAI, at the left KONGO-SATTA, on the right SONSHO-BUCCHO-SON. These are designated important cultural properties.
This temple had been lost by a sad misunderstanding, then rebuilt in 1827.



Kakuban-Sho-nin

He was born in Saga Pref. in 1114. At age 20, he entered in KOYASAN.
At that time, 300 years had past after the founder of this mountain KUKAI died.
KOYASAN had lost its original idea.
He endeavored to develop Buddhism, tried to recover Denpo-in as a place of study.
He was strongly supported by TOBA-JOKO(Emperor)so economy was established.
The priests in high degree who had been conservative, were resistant to him and serious antagonism developped.
Finally KAKUBAN handed all to them and went to HOFUKU-JI , Negoro.
At the end of HEIAN period, many religious sects developed.
Kakuban –Sho’nin was a man who wanted to get the circumstance of Buddhism back to its origins.
Honbou

Restored inner palaces are: Duke TOKUGAWA of KISHU’s MINATO PALACE,NAGUSA PALACE and a Branch Palace.
TAISHO EMPEROR, the present EMPEROR and ROYAL FAMILY stayed in NAGUSA PALACE.
The garden is designated a national scenic site, one of the representative Japanese gardens.
